Your Tower Garden Questions Answered

Here are answers to some of the most common questions people ask when they’re considering a Tower Garden or just getting started growing fresh food at home.

What's the Difference Between Tower Garden FLEX and Tower Garden HOME?

Tower Garden HOME is designed primarily for indoor growing. It’s a great option for growing leafy greens, herbs, and baby greens year-round inside your home. When used indoors, it works with full-spectrum LED grow lights (sold separately) that provide the light plants need to thrive.

Tower Garden FLEX is the more flexible model. Many people use it outdoors to grow larger crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplants, but it can also be used indoors with grow lights.

If you're trying to decide between the two models, you can see a side-by-side breakdown on the Tower Garden HOME vs FLEX comparison page.

What Do You Need to Get Started?

Everything you need to start growing comes in the box: the tower, pump, timer, Mineral Blend nutrients, rockwool cubes, net pots, and a seedling starter kit, along with a clear step-by-step setup guide.

Honestly, if you can follow a recipe, you can grow with a Tower Garden — no green thumb required.

You can learn more about how the system works on the How It Works page.

Do You Need Sunlight to Grow with a Tower Garden?

Tower Garden can grow successfully using either natural sunlight or grow lights, depending on where you place it.

Many people grow with a Tower Garden outdoors using natural sunlight. When growing indoors, plants need full-spectrum LED grow lights to provide the light required for healthy growth.

Tower Garden HOME is typically used indoors with grow lights, while Tower Garden FLEX can be used outdoors in sunlight or indoors with lights.

This flexibility is one of the reasons many people are able to grow fresh greens and vegetables year-round.

How Much Electricity Does a Tower Garden Use?

Tower Garden uses a small pump that runs on a timer to circulate water through the system. The pump itself uses very little electricity.

If you're growing indoors with LED grow lights, those lights will use more power than the pump, but they are designed to be energy-efficient and are comparable to other indoor plant lighting systems.

Many growers find that the electricity cost is relatively small compared to the value of having fresh greens and vegetables available at home.

How Much Space is Needed?

Tower Garden takes up surprisingly little space. The base footprint is about 3 square feet, which is roughly the size of a small side table. Tower Garden HOME is slightly smaller at about 2.75 square feet.

If you’re growing indoors with LED lights, you’ll also want enough space not only above the tower but around it as well. The light frame extends outward slightly, so allowing a little extra room helps the lights cover the plants evenly as they grow. In most homes, a spot near a wall or in a corner works perfectly.

In my own home, I grow indoors year-round and simply give the towers a little extra room for the lights and plant growth.

How Many Plants Can You Grow at One Time?

Plant capacity depends on the model.

Tower Garden HOME has 32 planting ports (16 full-size and 16 baby greens).

Tower Garden FLEX includes 20 full-size ports, but it can expand to 28 plants with an Extension Kit or 52 plants with the Baby Greens Extension Kit.

That means you can grow a surprisingly large amount of food in just a few square feet of space.

Is the Plastic Used in Tower Gardens BPA-Free?

Yes. Tower Garden systems are made from food-grade, BPA-free plastic that is designed specifically for growing food safely. The materials are UV-stabilized and built to last outdoors or indoors.

Tower Garden also includes a 5-year limited warranty, which reflects the durability of the system.

What Can You Not Grow in a Tower Garden?

Most leafy greens, herbs, and many fruiting crops grow extremely well in a Tower Garden.

However, root crops such as carrots, potatoes, onions, and garlic aren’t a good fit because they need soil to form properly. Woody plants like trees, bushes, or grapevines also aren’t suitable.

Everything else — from lettuce and kale to tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and strawberries — tends to grow very well in the system.

What Problems Can You Have with a Tower Garden?

Like any growing system, there are a few common issues beginners might run into. The two most common are:

• Yellowing leaves, which usually means the pH or nutrients need adjusting
• Leggy seedlings, which typically means the plants need more light

Both are usually easy to fix once you know what to look for. The Tower Garden community and support resources are also very helpful if you ever get stuck.

Do I Have to Pay for My Tower Garden All at Once?

No. Many people choose to spread the cost over time using the interest-free payment plan available at checkout.

Some growers prefer to pay in full, while others choose the monthly option to make it easier to get started.

How Do I Maintain My Tower Garden?

Maintenance is surprisingly simple.

Most growers spend just a few minutes each week checking the water level, adjusting pH if needed, and adding nutrients when the reservoir is refilled. Plants also benefit from occasional pruning as they grow.

If you'd like a detailed walkthrough, you can visit the Growing Guide for tips on maintaining healthy plants.

Do I Need to Grow My Own Seedlings?

No. You can absolutely start seeds yourself, but you can also purchase ready-to-grow seedlings from certified Tower Garden providers.

These seedlings arrive already started in rockwool cubes and can be placed directly into the tower, which makes getting started even easier.

How Do You Set Up a Tower Garden?

Setting up a Tower Garden is straightforward. The process involves assembling the tower sections, filling the reservoir with water and mineral solution, and placing seeds or seedlings into the growing ports.

Most people can assemble the system in about 30 minutes using the setup guide included with the tower.

If you’d like a simple overview of how the growing system works, you can visit the How Tower Garden Works page.

Is Tower Garden Worth the Money?

For many people, the value of a Tower Garden comes from having fresh greens, herbs, and vegetables available right at home.

Instead of buying packaged greens each week, you can harvest directly from your tower whenever you need them. Over time, many growers find they eat more fresh produce simply because it’s easy and convenient.

For me, having fresh greens available year-round has made it much easier to build healthy meals at home.
